A printed circuit board (PCB) mechanically connects and electronically supports electrical components with conductive transducers, pads and several other features etched into one or more thin sheet layers of highly conductive non-insulated copper laminated on and/or beneath sheet layers of an insulating material. The two-sided boards have numerous possible configurations. The most common are single sided TQD (Thin Plastic Electroplating) or two-sided circuit boards. The materials which make up the PCB material include a core which is typically made of melamine resin or other thermo-filled, powder-coated, or dielectric, polyester or fiberglass materials. Other materials that can be used are printed plastics, wood, gold plating, epoxy, Dacron, or silk-screen.

Printed circuit boards have played a large role in how modern electronics are constructed because they enable manufacturers and electronics engineers to quickly visualize electrical signals and patterns and use them to design and manufacture hardware and electronic components. The printed circuit boards that use electronics components and solder only have two major components: conductive circuitry and a surface which can be laminated or coated with a conductive material. The first layer is commonly an insulating material such as polyester or wax, which provides a smooth, even, non-marking surface for soldering. Another layer, which is usually deposited on top of the conductive layer, is an adhesive material such as super-glue or hot glue.

While many types of PCBs have emerged, the most popular varieties are printed circuit boards used in personal computer systems and portable computers. Other types include modular, stacked, total and rackmount printed circuit boards. PCBs that are used to design and manufacture personal computers incorporate special circuitry that enables the devices to communicate with software and other components installed on the device. Components of the devices can be soldered directly to the PC board using PCB-based soldering techniques. Some manufacturers build portable PCs that incorporate PC boards with printed circuit boards that use solid state drives (SSD) and other storage devices.

A majority of printed circuit boards are designed to carry out a specific function. For instance, an LCD screen contains several components, which are installed on top of one another and connect to the motherboard to form an integrated display system. Each of these components performs a specific function, and none of them is designed to degrade over time. In addition to functional functionality, printed circuit boards are also designed for aesthetic purposes. They may incorporate a logo, graphic or text, and in some instances, a picture of the product being manufactured. For example, when a consumer purchases a new digital camera, the product identification label that comes with the camera contains a photo of the camera along with the model number, serial number and manufacturer.

While PCBs have enabled the mass production of electronics and products, they have created new problems. Because so many devices rely on the functionality of these printed circuit boards, they have become an important part of the information hierarchy. In addition to the devices that are physically present, an individual person who possesses a particular PCB should be able to access all of the information that he needs to know. If this happens, then he will be able to determine which parts of his product require replacement and which do not. It is for these very reasons that it has been imperative for manufacturers to make their products accessible in this manner.

To assist manufacturers in their decision making process as it pertains to PCB material selection and component installation, many suppliers offer PCBS analysis and material selection software. When evaluating PCBS material, a company must first determine the layout and the substrate to be used. After these decisions have been made, the design team can then begin to select components, which are best suited to each of these requirements. It is important to remember that printed circuit boards contain a variety of components, which must be selected based on both function and the layout of the components. Therefore, if you are considering having a printed circuit boards created, you must have a firm understanding of the many aspects of this material and the way that it must be installed.
